Location: Puget Sound
(Steilacoom to McNeil Island) / Juneau, AK
Completed: October, 2005
Project Details: NUC recently conducted ROV operations to assist with the installation of submarine high voltage cables in the Puget Sound and Juneau, Alaska. The cable lay in the Puget Sound consisted of working in high currents just south of the Tacoma Narrows Bridge in about 550 feet of water. NUC live boated across current behind the 350’ cable lay ship, Sophie, and conducted the post lay survey. Due to the ROV’s unique design (dynamically positioned thrusters), ROV operators
were able to work in extreme side currents and tidal conditions and inspect the cable at a rate of 2.5 knots. This design allows the operator to change the direction of the four longitudinal thrusters to make allowances for cross current. The system was mobilized aboard NUC vessel, Wolf Eel, a forty one foot custom built aluminum dive boat.
After completing the cable lay in the Puget Sound NUC mobilized the Mohican system to Juneau, Alaska to support a nine mile power cable installation. The Mohican ROV system has also been recently used for outfall surveys for King County and various other municipalities owning deep water subsea structures in the Puget Sound.
